How to Become a Driving Instructor in the UK?
Becoming a driving instructor in the UK involves passing a DBS check, completing specific training, and passing a series of 3 tests. At LEAP we will guide you through the entire process. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you through the process:
1. Obtain a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check
Before you can start the process, you need to pass a DBS check to ensure you are suitable to work with the public. The cost of the DBS check is £8.22.
2. Pass the Three-Part ADI Tests
To earn your Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) license, you’ll need to pass three tests. Here’s a breakdown:
Part 1: Theory Test
Cost: £81
Details: This test includes a multiple-choice section and a hazard perception test. It’s more challenging than the standard driving theory test, with a higher pass mark and more questions. Study the Highway Code, traffic signs, and advanced driving techniques. Numerous online resources are available to help you prepare.
Part 2: Advanced Driving Test
Cost: £111
Details: This test assesses your advanced driving skills, ensuring you can demonstrate a high level of competency and safety on the road.
After passing the Part 2 test and having had at least 40 hours training from a qualified ADI in providing driving instructruction you can apply for a trainee license. The purpose of the trainee license is to help you gain experience instructing pupils to drive for preparation of your ADI part 3 test.
Part 3: Instructional Ability Test
Cost: £111
Details: This test evaluates your ability to teach others. During this assessment, a Driver and vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) examiner will observe you teaching one of your students. You are assessed based on 3 categories: lesson planning, risk management and teaching and learning strategies. Upon passing this test you will gain you Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) license.
