How to Become a Driving Instructor in the UK?
1. Disclosure and Barring
Service (DBS) Check Before starting, you will need to complete a DBS check to confirm your suitability to work with the public.
Cost: £8.22
This is the first step, and once completed, you can begin preparing for the qualification process.
2. The Three-Part ADI Qualification Process
Part 1: Theory Test
Cost: £81
This is a more advanced version of the standard driving theory test, consisting of
multiple-choice questions and hazard perception. The pass mark is higher, and the content goes deeper into driving knowledge and instructional understanding.
At LEAP, guidance is provided on the most effective apps, revision tools, and reading materials to help you prepare efficiently. You will be directed towards the right resources so you are not wasting time on unnecessary content, giving you the best chance of passing first time.
Part 2: Advanced Driving Test
Cost: £111
This stage assesses your driving ability to a high standard. You will need to demonstrate safe,
controlled, and confident driving across a range of road types and conditions.
We typically recommend around 10 hours of focused training to prepare for this test.
Training Cost: £40 per hour
Training is structured around your current ability, focusing on refining your driving to meet DVSA expectations. Sessions can be booked flexibly, allowing you to progress at a pace that suits you.
Part 3 Preparation: Instructional Training & Trainee Licence
After passing Part 2, you can apply for a trainee licence, which allows you to start teaching pupils and gaining real experience.
At this stage, LEAP provides a structured 40-hour training programme designed to prepare you for Part 3. After completing the 40 hours, you may apply for your trainee licence and begin teaching and earning.
